TUTORING SERVICES

INTRODUCTION // 01

For me, tutoring starts with putting my student tutees and their parents at ease, giving you confidence that you can achieve what you have set out to do, or what you aspire to do. I use this word a lot - confidence - because it is crucial, it's vital to all of us in believing we can do as well as we want. This helps to develop optimism, or as the great economist John Maynard Keynes called it, “animal spirits” !

I am a strong communicator, with years in Marketing and in senior positions in businesses, and I use this as a key part of my toolbox in providing that confidence. I am a great advocate for both subjects, Business and Economics, as I believe they form a great pathway into both university courses and longer-term life in business, which is where we all end up. Then the real work starts!

Although I am based in South Oxfordshire, with easy access across Oxon and West Berkshire, nearly all of my tutoring takes place online. That said, visits and sessions can be organised when and where relevant to help meet a student's specific needs.

SERVICES OVERVIEW // 02

  • Tutoring one-to-one (1:1) with students across UK and internationally.

  • Primarily online and some home-based sessions where local/appropriate.

  • Flexible timings - most students are at school/college Monday-Friday daytime, so most of my sessions are late afternoon or evenings, plus weekends and holidays.

  • Home schooled students are offered flexible timings during the ‘working day’ too (Mon-Fri 9-5)

  • Help students organise and plan their notes, files and overall approach to the subject.

  • Supplement classwork and coursework - clarify school teacher input where any confusion or misunderstanding has occurred.

  • Review and mark past papers in detail both verbally and via written answers (often used as homework between tutoring sessions).

  • Develop exam technique - ensure students are clear on what examiners are looking for in exam answers.

  • Hold extra sessions and extra marking in build-up to exams and assessments - final push towards success!

  • Discuss business and economics happening around us every day, in order to broaden knowledge and apply these to the syllabus and exam questions.

  • Access to and recommendations to lots of resources to support each student's learning.

  • University applications: assistance with personal statements, choices and options and also through the Clearing service after results day.

The courses and exam boards I have experience in, both teaching and tutoring, include:

  • A level Business (exam boards: AQA, Edexcel and Cambridge International)

  • A level Economics (AQA and Edexcel)

  • BTEC Business Level 3 (Pearson)

  • BTEC International (Pearson)

  • T level Management and Administration Level 3 (City & Guilds)

  • GCSE Business

  • BTEC Business Level 1/2 (Key Stage 4).

If you, or your child, is studying a Business or Economics course not listed above, please contact me and let's discuss, as I am open to learning new exam boards (often the content is almost identical, with small variations in exam technique).

RESOURCES // 04

All good students (and tutors!) should be well equipped. I strongly recommend students purchase revision guides and practice resources as recommended by your school/college, or those that are obviously for the correct course and exam board. These are important to supplement your learning. But you do need to use them - no point in collecting dust!

Equally, there are many superb online resources out there, but be careful which you are accessing. As a starter, I'd strongly recommend all content from Tutor2U, the direct links here to Business and Economics sections. Other favourites include TES, SaveMyExams and ZigZag Education. Good video based content is plentiful from the likes of Tutor2U, TES and also worth looking at TakingTheBiz for Business, EconplusDal for Economics and Expert Tuition. Useful podcasts are aplenty, ones I enjoy are: Tim Harford, Freakonomics and Political Currency.

During tutoring sessions and as part of homeworks I set, I will use a selection of these resources as they're really useful and provide variety.
