I have provided some background and context below, leading to how I became a tutor.
But I see my role as simply: bring my subject to life and develop learning that is interesting and engaging...which is much more likely to bring the intended results.
A bit about me
I attended a selective grammar school in Kent and enjoyed my first 5 years. As a very successful school, steeped in academic history, it was very much given that leavers would go on to university. This was drummed into me. However, I actually struggled with engagement during Sixth Form and learnt a very harsh lesson when the results came in - just one A level. Oh dear! (I wish more tutors had existed back then!!).
I went through Clearing and managed to get on an HND course, and then transferred to a full BSc (Hons) degree course after the first year. I had learned my lesson and was determined to work hard, focus and not muck it up again!
At the end of the 4-year course ('sandwich' year in an admin role at Rank Xerox in Milton Keynes - faxes were talk of the town!), I gained a First and joint Top Student. After a couple of years working in London, I was offered a fully-funded PhD by BT and jumped at it. Although I went back into industry after 3 years of full-time research into e-commerce and small businesses, I received my Doctorate just under 5 years later.
In an interesting and varied commercial career, I gained over 20 years’ industry experience in range of companies, many in senior management positions, two as a Director and as a consultant too. My specialisms are: Strategy, Marketing, Operations and Finance.
Now as a teacher and tutor (since 2019, QTS in 2020), I love to use my own real-life examples of companies and situations I have experienced, as well as those we see and read around us all the time. This works well for both Business and Economics. Given my background, I am a well-rounded tutor, who is detailed, analytical, focused and one who values hard work - after all, that is the real key to success!!
If you would like a copy of my CV, please email me and I'll send by return.
If you're interested, the selfie above was taken in April 2025; it's a view across the Rioja valley in northern Spain, one of my favourite places! The image below is a stock image from Wix, a Roman amphitheatre in Croatia, never been there, but I will one day!
