Need a Tutor? Where to start?

The need or desire for tutoring has grown exponentially in recent years. Why? It's a combination of the effects of Covid in 2022 (and its fall-out), parents being ever-more engaged and savvy about their children's learning, schools providing a lot more online access to how students are getting on and signposting resources, and of course parents diverting hard-earned income to help their children - the upshot being it can all appear a bit of a minefield!
But where to start? Obviously, most of us would go to google and talk to friends, the school/college and perhaps ask questions on forums, and such like. But even then, there is no single authority helping to check on quality (think Checkatrade for builders), which is unnerving given how heavily regulated and controlled the schools sector is in the provision of education.
Clearly, you're looking for experience, expertise and the ability for your student child to develop a strong rapport with the tutor. To this end I would always recommend both parent(s) and student have an initial chat with 2-3 tutors - the onus being on the tutor to set it up over Zoom or similar - and then you can make a more informed decision. Ask relevant questions, check background, discuss approach and resources used, but most importantly ensure you can communicate with this person and that you're happy to spend many hours in their company learning from them !!
If the first one doesn't quite work out (it's happened to all of us), then don't be fearful of saying as much, and trying someone else. All teachers are used to this; some students love us, whilst some....well, let's just say, don't.
Personally, I am always keen on and recommend a free introductory chat. I think it's important for all parties. Let's ensure we're happy to move on together. And don't forget feedback along the way. There's nothing worse than finishing a course and then getting feedback that the student and/or parent would have preferred something different - let us know and we can adapt accordingly, no problem!
